Janis Lyn Joplin was born on January 19, 1943, in Port Arthur. Unfortunately, Joplin passed died at the young age of 27 from an heroin overdose. Joplin attended several universities in the early sixties but never graduated. Her focus shifted more towards music, alcohol, and drugs than her study books. She began performing in coffeehouses in Texan small towns until a friend invited her to sing in a rock band, leading Janis Joplin to San Francisco. There, she became the lead singer of the psychedelic rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company. Her raw, passionate singing style quickly made her an icon of the counterculture of that time. With this band, she released an album and two singles. The addictions took a toll on performances and relationships, leading to the band's breakup. After her departure, she released the album I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!  With even more drugs and alcohol, Joplin tried to cope with the pressures of the artist's life. An accidental overdose proved fatal. On October 4, 1970, she passed away at the age of 27 in a hotel in Los Angeles. The album Pearl was released posthumously.

Janis Joplin's performance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 is one of her most legendary live performances. Woodstock was an iconic music festival that took place from August 15 to 18, 1969, in Bethel, New York, considered a pinnacle of the 1960s counterculture. One of the highlights was her rendition of the song Piece of My Heart. Other popular songs include Me and Bobby McGee, Ball and Chain, Cry Baby en Mercedes Benz. Janis Joplin is remembered as one of the greatest singers, an icon of the 1960s. Her premature death placed her in the sad category of musical legends who died at the same age, including Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison, leading to speculation about the so-called "27 Club." Joplin is still considered one of the most influential blues singers of the sixties. Her lyrics reflect a sense of pain and loneliness from a woman with low self-esteem and plagued by a lack of confidence. In 2013, Joplin received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
