Today, July 1st, is the birthday of Debbie Harry, singer, songwriter, and actress. She was the frontwoman of the rock band Blondie. The edit above and her portrait on the musical references/birthday calendars below are made by me, Frieke.

Deborah Harry, better known as Debbie Harry, was born on July 1, 1945, in Miami, Florida. She was adopted at three months old by Richard and Catherine Harry and grew up in Hawthorne, New Jersey. Before Blondie, Deborah Harry already worked in the entertainment industry as a waitress, Playboy Bunny, and dancer in New York City. In the early 70s, she was a member of several bands, including The Stilettos, where she met guitarist Chris Stein, who would later become her partner in both her personal life and music.

In 1974, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein formed Blondie together. The band began performing at the legendary New York clubs CBGB and Max's Kansas City, known for their punk and new wave scene. Blondie quickly made a name for themselves in the music scene. Debbie Harry's unique voice and appearance played a significant role in the band's success. Their debut album, Blondie, released in 1976, was not an immediate commercial success. Their second album, Plastic Letters (1977), brought them more recognition with hits like Denis and Presence, Dear. However, their real breakthrough came with their third album, Parallel Lines (1978). This album brought Blondie international success, featuring a series of hits that really put the band on the map. One of the biggest hits from this album was Heart of Glass, a blend of disco and punk. This song reached number one in several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. The album also featured other hits like One Way or Another, Hanging on the Telephone and Sunday Girl.

After Parallel Lines, Blondie continued to enjoy success with subsequent albums and hits, such as Eat to the Beat (1979) and Autoamerican  (1980), with songs like The Tide Is High and Rapture. One of Blondie's biggest and most iconic hits, Call Me  was released as a single and also featured on the soundtrack of American Gigolo. Harry was heavily involved in writing many of Blondie's songs, often collaborating with other band members, especially Chris Stein.

Debbie Harry released several solo albums, including KooKoo (1981) and Rockbird (1986). Although her solo work did not achieve the same commercial success as Blondie, it received positive reviews. In addition to her musical career, Harry has appeared in several films, including Union City (1980), Videodrome  (1983), and Hairspray  (1988). She also made various guest appearances in TV shows and theater productions.

In 1997, Blondie was reformed and released several albums, including No Exit (1999) with the hit Maria Debbie Harry remains active in the music world and still tours with Blondie. She has also published an autobiography, Face It (2019), in which she describes her life and career.

Debbie Harry is considered a style icon, known for her signature blonde hair and original fashion choices. She has had a lasting impact on the music industry and is often cited as an inspiration by many artists.
