Today, July 9, is the birthday of Bon Scott, the legendary lead singer of one of the world's greatest hard rock bands, AC/DC. The edit above and his portrait on the musical reference works birthday calendars below are made by me.

Bon Scott was born on July 9, 1946, in Kirriemuir, Scotland. When he was six years old, Scott moved with his family to Melbourne, Australia. During his youth, he was involved in various music projects. Scott played drums in his first band, The Spektors, and then became one of the lead singers in the band, The The Valentines. The band had several hits in Australia, including Every Day I Have to Cry and Juliette. The Valentines were known for their 'bubblegum pop' image and had a large young fan base in Australia.

Bon Scott joined AC/DC in 1974 after being recommended by a mutual friend. He replaced the original singer Dave Evans. During his time with AC/DC, the band released several iconic albums, including High Voltage (1975), Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (1976), Let There Be Rock (1977), Powerage (1978), en Highway to Hell (1979), which was a great commercial success and is considered one of the best rock albums of all time. Scott had a distinctive raw voice and energetic stage presence, which contributed to the band's unique sound.

Bon Scott played a crucial role in writing many of AC/DC's songs. He was not only the lead singer but also a significant lyricist for the band. Scott's raw and often humorous lyrics contributed to AC/DC's signature sound and image. Some of the most famous songs that Bon Scott co-wrote include:

  • Highway to Hell, the title track of the last album Scott recorded with the band.
  • T.N.T., one of AC/DC's classics.
  • Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, the title track of the album known for its humorous and provocative lyrics.
  • Let There Be Rock, a powerful rock anthem.
  • Whole Lotta Rosie, a song about an Australian woman named Rosie whom Bon Scott met during their tour in 1976. The song is known for its raw energy and as one of AC/DC's best live recordings.
  • It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll), an autobiographical song about the challenges of life as a musician.

Bon Scott died on February 19, 1980, at the age of 33 in London, England. He was found dead in a parked car after a night of heavy drinking. The official cause of death was acute alcohol poisoning. After his death, AC/DC decided to continue with a new singer, Brian Johnson, and released the iconic album Back in Black as a tribute to Scott. This album became one of the best-selling albums of all time.

Bon Scott's rugged lifestyle and undeniable talent left a lasting impression on the world of rock music. His unique voice, energetic performances, and songwriting talent are still appreciated and remembered by music lovers worldwide.
