Today is the birthday of Freddie Mercury, one of the greatest rock singers of all time, renowned for his impressive four-octave vocal range, flamboyant stage presence, and groundbreaking artistic vision. The edit above and his portrait on the musical birthday calendars below are made by me, Frieke.

Freddie Mercury, born as Farrokh Bulsara on September 5, 1946, in Stone Town, Zanzibar (now part of Tanzania), was born into a Parsi family of Indian descent, followers of Zoroastrianism. His father worked for the British colonial government. He and his sister were sent by their parents to an English boarding school in India, where he learned to play the piano. In 1964, Freddie moved with his family to the United Kingdom, where he studied at Ealing College of Art in London. In 1969, he joined a band called IBEX and changed his name to Freddie Mercury.

A year later, in 1970, Mercury, along with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, founded the band Queen in London. This rock band evolved from Smile, which May had formed in 1968. Not long after, John Deacon joined the group. Queen grew into one of the most successful bands in pop history. In 1973, their first studio album Queen  was released, and it became a great success. Queen released a total of 15 studio albums, with several major hits, including: Killer Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody  Somebody to Love - We Will Rock You - We Are the Champions (een van de grootste anthems in de rockgeschiedenis) Bicycle Race - Fat Bottomed Girls- Don't Stop Me Now - Another One Bites the Dust - Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Radio Ga Ga - I Want to Break Free - A Kind of Magic  & The Show Must Go On van het album Innuendo (1991), the last album released during Freddie Mercury's lifetime.

Freddie Mercury was famous for his spectacular and flamboyant stage performances, often accompanied by his dynamic vocal technique. He had a vocal range of nearly four octaves and could sing both delicate ballads and powerful rock songs with impressive precision.

Freddie Mercury was a complex person who carefully separated his private life from his public image. In the 1970s, he had a long-term relationship with his soulmate Mary Austin. Although their romantic relationship ended when Freddie acknowledged his homosexuality, they remained close friends, and Freddie left her most of his fortune.

In the late 1980s, Freddie was diagnosed with AIDS, but he kept his diagnosis secret for a long time. It was only on November 23, 1991, one day before his death, that he publicly announced through an official statement that he was suffering from the disease. He passed away on November 24, 1991, at the age of 45 in his London home. His death marked a great loss for the music world, but his legacy lives on through the music he left behind.

Freddie Mercury is remembered worldwide as one of the greatest artists of all time. His contribution to the music world, both as a member of Queen and as a solo artist, is invaluable. In 1992, the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness was organized, where major artists such as David Bowie, Elton John, and George Michael paid tribute to him. Additionally, in 2018, the biographical film Bohemian Rhapsody was released, with actor Rami Malek portraying Freddie. The film was a huge success and sparked a revival of Queen and Freddie Mercury’s popularity among younger generations.
