Today is the birthday of Amy Winehouse, a British singer with a unique voice, which allowed her to effortlessly switch between different vocal styles like jazz, soul, and blues. Her life was filled with successes but also marked by personal struggles. The edit above and her portrait on the musical birthday calendars below are made by me, Frieke.

Amy Jade Winehouse was born on September 14, 1983, in Southgate, London. She grew up in a musical family; her father, Mitch Winehouse, was a taxi driver but sang jazz in his free time, and her mother, Janis, was a pharmacist. Amy's parents, Mitch and Janis Winehouse, divorced when she was nine years old, which had a profound effect on her. She stayed with her mother. Amy had a complex relationship with her father Mitch; while she was very attached to him, his choices and absence during her childhood contributed to her emotional issues. Mitch had a strong influence on her musical tastes and her love for jazz.

She signed her first record deal at the age of 19, leading to her debut album Frank (2003), which received critical acclaim for her jazz-influenced voice. The album includes hits like Stronger Than Me and In My Bed, earning her a nomination for the Mercury Prize.

Her true breakthrough came with her second album, Back to Black (2006), which made her world-famous. This album was a blend of soul, Motown, and old rhythm-and-blues sounds. It featured major hits like Back to Black - You Know I’m No Good  and Rehab—the latter becoming an anthem for her personal struggle with addiction. The album won five Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album. Winehouse was known for her deep, expressive voice and her ability to blend retro styles with a modern twist.

Despite her musical successes, Amy's life was overshadowed by her struggles with alcohol and drug addiction. Her tumultuous relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil, whom she married in 2007, played a significant role in this. Blake openly admitted that he had introduced Amy to hard drugs, exacerbating her issues. The media focused intensely on her addictions and personal life, dubbing her a "troubled genius."

In the last years of her life, Winehouse made several attempts to recover from her addictions. Despite her efforts to re-establish her career in the music industry, she was often hindered by personal problems. She had to cancel several concerts and was sometimes unintelligible on stage.

Amy’s final public appearance was in 2011, just weeks before her death, at a charity concert in London where she made a guest appearance. On July 23, 2011, Amy Winehouse was found dead in her home in Camden, London, at the age of 27. The cause of death was alcohol poisoning. Her death placed her in the infamous "27 Club," a group of musicians who died at the age of 27, including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Kurt Cobain.

Although Amy Winehouse released only two studio albums during her lifetime, her impact on modern music is immense. Her blend of vintage sounds with contemporary themes, her expressive voice, and the rawness of her lyrics have inspired many artists. Her life became the subject of the documentary Amy (2015), which won an Oscar and provided an intimate look at her struggles and musical genius.

After her death, her family and friends established the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a charity that helps young people with issues such as addiction and mental health. Her legacy continues to live on, both through...
