Today is the birthday of Andrea Bocelli, a world-famous Italian tenor, known for his unique voice and his ability to combine classical music with pop. The edit above and his portrait on the musical birthday calendar/reference guide below, are made by me, Frieke.

Andrea Bocelli was born on September 22, 1958, in Lajatico, a town in Tuscany, Italy. He was born partially blind due to congenital glaucoma. At the age of 12, he completely lost his sight after an accident during a soccer match. Although his passion for music was evident from a young age, he studied law at the University of Pisa and briefly worked as a lawyer. At the same time, he continued taking singing lessons and developing his musical skills.

Bocelli’s career took off when he made a demo recording of Miserere, a duet written by Zucchero Fornaciari intended for Pavarotti. Pavarotti was so impressed by Bocelli's singing that he encouraged him to continue singing. This led to collaborations with famous artists and his breakthrough in the music industry. His breakthrough came in 1994 when he won the Sanremo Festival, a prestigious Italian music festival, with the song Il Mare Calmo della Sera.

Bocelli combines classical opera with pop music. This is what sets him apart from other opera singers and has helped him reach a broader audience. He has recorded both classical arias and modern pop songs. Some of his best-known songs include: Con te partirò (1995), which also became a huge hit in a duet version with Sarah Brightman, Time to Say Goodbye (1996), Vivo per lei 1995) (often known in duet versions), Canto della Terra (1999), Melodramma (2001), Un nuovo giorno (2004), E più ti penso (2015) (made famous as a duet with Ariana Grande), Nelle tue mani  (Now We Are Free) (2015), and Fall On Me (2018) in a duet with his son Matteo Bocelli.

Although he is mainly known for his crossover work, Bocelli has also recorded full operas. Some of his most famous arias include: Nessun dorma from Turandot – Giacomo Puccini (1924-1926), La donna è mobile from Rigoletto – Giuseppe Verdi (1851), Una furtiva lagrima from L'elisir d'amore – Gaetano Donizetti (1832), and Ave Maria – Charles Gounod / Johann Sebastian Bach (1859).

About his personal life: Bocelli is married to Veronica Berti, with whom he has a daughter, Virginia. He also has two sons, Amos and Matteo, from his previous marriage to Enrica Cenzatti. Bocelli is a devout Roman Catholic and has often spoken about how his faith has helped him through difficult times. Much of his work is infused with spiritual themes, especially in his albums with religious music. He is also an active philanthropist. He founded the Andrea Bocelli Foundation, which focuses on helping people in need through projects aimed at education, poverty reduction, and access to medical care.

In recent years, Bocelli has collaborated with artists such as Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, and Matteo Bocelli (his son). His album was his first collection of new original songs in 14 years. This album reached the number one position on the U.S. Billboard 200, making Bocelli the first classical artist to achieve this since 1997.

Andrea Bocelli continues to perform and release new music, with his concerts selling out worldwide. He is often seen as an inspiration due to his perseverance, artistry, and contribution to music.
