Today, July 26, is the birthday of rock icon Mick Jagger, frontman of the legendary rock band The Rolling Stones. The edit above and his portrait on the musical reference works/birthday calendars below are made by me, Frieke.

Sir Michael Philip Jagger, a rock musician, actor, writer, composer, and producer, was born on July 26, 1943, in Dartford, England. Jagger is one of the most iconic figures in rock music history, with a career spanning more than five decades.

The formation of The Rolling Stones is a story of friendship, shared musical passions, and chance. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were childhood friends. They lost touch when their families moved but reconnected years later and joined a band called Blues Incorporated. Brian Jones, known as a talented musician and blues enthusiast, also played in this band. When Jones wanted to start his own band, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards joined him. Bill Wyman, known for his bass playing and amplifiers, was also recruited. Charlie Watts, who had also played with Blues Incorporated, was invited to join the band. Watts joined the group in 1963, completing the classic lineup.

The name The Rolling Stones was conceived by Brian Jones, inspired by Muddy Waters' song "Rollin' Stone." Jones decided this was a suitable name for the band. Andrew Loog Oldham became their manager and helped develop their image and sound. He saw potential in the band's rebellious look and encouraged them to write their own songs.

The band's first performance took place on July 12, 1962, at the Marquee Club in London. The band members at that time were Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Ian Stewart (piano), Dick Taylor (bass), and Tony Chapman (drums).

Their first single, a cover of Chuck Berry's Come On, was released in 1963. The breakthrough came with the release of  I Want to Be Your Man (written by Lennon-McCartney) and their first major hit Not Fade Away in 1964.

In 1965, The Rolling Stones released (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, a song that made them famous worldwide and became an anthem of the 1960s. From this point, The Rolling Stones grew into one of the most iconic and influential rock bands of all time, known for their energetic performances, numerous hits, and lasting impact on music history.

Jagger is a highly charismatic performer with a distinctive voice and energetic stage presence. He is known for his striking dance style and charm, captivating audiences for decades. Besides his role as lead singer, he also wrote many of the lyrics for The Rolling Stones' songs, often in collaboration with Keith Richards. Some major hits by the Stones, in which Jagger played a central role, include Satisfaction, Paint It Black, Sympathy for the Devil, Start Me Up en Jumpin Jack Flash, to name a few.

Jagger and The Rolling Stones have had a tremendous influence on music culture and have become symbols of rebellion and the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. Their music has inspired generations and continues to be loved by fans worldwide to this day.

Jagger has released several solo albums, including She's the Boss (1985) en Wandering Spirit (1993).  He has also ventured into the film world, acting in movies such as "Performance" (1970), "Ned Kelly" (1970), "Freejack" (1992), and "The Man from Elysian Fields" (2001). He was also an executive producer of the HBO series "Vinyl" (2016). Mick Jagger has a great interest in art and literature and is known for his art collections. Noteworthy is also his activism and philanthropic work. He has been involved in various charitable causes and has spoken out on issues such as climate change, poverty, and human rights.

Mick Jagger remains active with The Rolling Stones and has received numerous awards over the years. His incredible career and status as a rock legend have made him an enduring icon within the music industry.
